A Literary Memoir

The book
The Space Between is a literary memoir about inheritance—not simply what we receive from the people and worlds that shape us, but how those inheritances change meaning over the course of a life.
I grew up in Singapore in a Malay Muslim family and learned early how to navigate faith, family, and belonging by accommodating expectations. That instinct followed me into the life I built in America—until, over time, the compromises that once helped me hold different worlds together began to exact a price.
At its heart, The Space Between asks what happens when we begin to look back at a life already lived and understand it differently.
A Coming-of-Age Story That Happens Twice
The first takes place in Singapore, as a young daughter learns how to live within the expectations she has inherited—faith, family, culture, education, and belonging.
The second happens decades later, after she has built a life in America and begins to reconsider what those inheritances mean to her.
It is not about rejecting the first or becoming someone entirely new. It is about deciding what to carry forward.
