Mother’s Day card

I worked at the Lancaster Eagle Gazette and had the opportunity to contribute to their feature columns. This was one I wrote about my mother. The Associated Press Society of Ohio gave it an Award of Merit, placing it second in the Columns category.

Excerpt:

I have never given my mother a Mother’s Day card before. No flowers, no chocolate candies, no silk scarf for the one who brought me into the world.

Love — or the lack of it — had nothing to do with it. Growing up in a modern but defiantly Asian country, the concept of Mother’s Day served only as an intrusive reminder of the West and its often imposing cultures.
