THE SPACE BETWEEN
A memoir
Coming September 21, 2027
A memoir about coming of age twice.
Raised in Singapore in a devout Malay Muslim family, Elita Suratman learned early how to live the life she had inherited. She carried that inheritance into an entirely different world—America, marriage, motherhood, and a life beyond the expectations that had shaped her.
The Space Between is about what we inherit from family, culture, and belief—and how, over a lifetime, we come to see those inheritances, and ourselves, differently.
THE LIFE BEHIND THE BOOK
I came to the United States for graduate school and stayed, drawn into a life of discovery and possibility far beyond anything I had imagined for myself.
Over the years, the distance between the world I was from and the one I came to know began to change the way I understood both. What I had once accepted as inheritance—family, faith, duty, culture, belonging—became something I learned to examine more closely, deciding what it meant to me and what I wanted to carry forward.
The Space Between grew out of that long process.
